Probably the most famous of York’s railwaymen, George Leeman led an extraordinary life as a lawyer, Liberal MP for York and, finally, Chairman of the North Eastern Railways from 1874 to 1880. Appropriately enough, his statue stands just a stone’s throw from The Grand.
